This Callowhill Market draws inspiration from the investigation of the relationship between the Callowhill community and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Urban Condenser

Collage City

Bringing together overlapping programs and intersecting forms will fuse the architecture into a spatially and visually rich landscape. As an urban condenser, this market is more than a fusion of form, program, and material into an active landscape, it also fuses different cultural and urban activities into a vibrant amenity to the neighborhood and the city as a whole.

These promising vibrant connections that flow through and over the different programs will produce a diverse set of urban experiences by a series of scenario collages, telling stories of three types of potential visitors’ changeable activities on the site from morning to evening. It takes programmatic and cultural activities that would normally be isolated moments within a community and intertwines them within an overlapping landscape.

Process

Being on the cusp of a renaissance, the artistic community and the burgeoning restaurant culture that call it home have started to make Callowhill a vibrant part of Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the pedestrianization of the viaduct railway will allow Callowhill to reconnect with surrounding neighborhoods, motivating the different cultural groups and social events gathering on the site.
